The effect of a concurrent working memory task and temporal offsets on the integration of auditory and visual speech information.

Audiovisual speech perception is an everyday occurrence of multisensory integration. Conflicting visual speech information can influence the perception of acoustic speech (namely the McGurk effect), and auditory and visual speech are integrated over a rather wide range of temporal offsets. This research examined whether the addition of a concurrent cognitive load task would affect the audiovis...

Seeing is Believing

In this paper we present a formal common sense theory of perception and belief. We begin with a logical analysis of perception, and present formal semantics for a modal perception operator. We then consider the relationship between perception and belief, and in particular the question of when perception should lead to belief change. Northern bald ibises follow others' gaze into distant space but not behind barriers.

Gaze following is the ability to use the visual orientation of others as a trigger to look in the same direction. Thereby, animals may either align their head and eye orientation with others (gaze following into distant space) or may even reposition themselves to look behind barriers impairing their perception (geometrical gaze following). It has been proposed that these two different modes are...

Age-related changes in the integration of gaze direction and facial expressions of emotion.

Gaze direction influences younger adults' perception of emotional expressions, with direct gaze enhancing the perception of anger and joy, while averted gaze enhances the perception of fear. Age-related declines in emotion recognition and eye-gaze processing have been reported, indicating that there may be age-related changes in the ability to integrate these facial cues. As there is evidence o...
